Local Bounty

One of my favorite things about summer and early fall is the opportunity to buy and cook local...My favorite place to stop almost daily when I can, is VanPelts market. VanPelts is a local , family owned farmers market that is owned and operated by a conservative Mennonite family. I love going  and deciding what I will make for supper based on what fresh produce is available that day.
In the summer I love a strange looking vegetable called kohlrabi (see photos below)- I love to slice it into squares and eat it raw, dipped in hummus or with a little Kosher salt sprinkled on it. In the fall they have sweet fingerling potatoes, that I leave the skin on , slice into quarter size pieces, toss in olive oil and bake! Throughout the season the choices change , the prices are reasonable and everything is so fresh! I bought red baby potatoes the other day that were harvested out of the rich soil that very morning! That is something that just doesn't happen at Giant Eagle...
One of the hardest parts about winter is not having the fresh, local goods available. This may be one reason I always dream about moving somewhere warm!
Take the time to buy local if you have the opportunity, it is great for your health, your pallete and your pocketbook! (I am not sure what made me use that word, it sound so old fashioned, and I never say it! I think I will leave it in though!)
Peace.
